Spreading Cheer this Holiday Season

This is the time of year when everyone’s hearts are full of joy and happiness.  I love how simple little acts can cheer someone’s day or brighten up their week.  The Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU does so much for children and their families throughout the year.  My husband and I are both VCU alumni and are extremely proud of The Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU.  This movement of Spreading Cheer is a wonderful way to boost the joy throughout the area and beyond.  The doctors and staff do so much for the families and children, but would love to hear how each of us #SpreadCheer!

There are 2 easy ways to #SpreadCheer this Holiday Season:

1.       Sending us their 6-word plan to #SpreadCheer this holiday season on CHoR’s Facebook page using the #SpreadCheer hashtag.

2.       Texting HEALTH to 50555 to donate $10 to help children in the hospital.

But, that’s not all!  Our favorite local bloggers Young House Love are involved as well.  Head on over to their blog for updates on how they will be Spreading Cheer to one of the hospital’s family waiting rooms. Their ideas are great and I cannot wait to see the finished product.

Avacado/Tomato Bagel {Recipe} - Mal Smiles Guest Post

Original Post over on Mal Smiles!

I love being Smile Sisters with Mallory - we actually got to meet before she moved out to Colorado and she's even more awesome in person!  Today I'm going to share a breakfast recipe with you, although I have been known to eat it for lunch or dinner as well.  So, to say that I’ve been obsessed with this breakfast would probably be an understatement.  Back In May, my girlfriend introduced me to this little gem.  Her family has always had these for breakfast, so she decided to bring it with her to a girl’s weekend at the beach. I've been thanking her ever since!

What you’ll need:
Bagel
Cream Cheese
Olive Oil
Oregano
Salt & Pepper
Tomato
Avocado
Onion (optional)
Smoked Salmon (optional)

Directions:
Toast the bagel.  While the bagel is being toasted, mix your cream cheese with a few drops of olive oil.  Then sprinkle in your oregano, salt, and pepper. Sorry ya’ll, I don’t do measurements, so this is all to your spice liking J
Once bagel is done, spread your cream cheese mixture on top. Then top with your toppings!  I stop after tomatoes and avocados, but my friend adds onion and smoked salmon to hers.

Enjoy! It’s delicious!

Teaberry Trails

I’m super excited to introduce you to Brittney, who is taking over my blog today J  She’s pretty awesome, so definitely go on over to her blog and say hello!

Why hello everyone! My name is Brittney and I blog over at Teaberry Trails. I am really excited to be here at Harris Heart-to-Hearts with Erin today! When I signed up for the Big & Littles Network, I truly never thought that I would be paired with such an awesome individual! It’s almost like we were meant to be seeing as we have so much in common and all! Cray-cray I tell ya!

Anyway, so here’s a bit about little ole me…
-Even though I moved quite often, I was born and raised in Virginia. When I was four we moved from Fairfax to a little town in Shenandoah County. We moved multiple times within my twelve years of school, but always stayed within our school district and I attnended the same school with the exception of a year my entire school career.
-My husband Jeff and I met in high school. Took us a bit to figure out that we were just meant to be, but we have it right now.
-Speaking of, we have two sweet little girls yet another thing Erin and I have in common! Willow Lola and Lyla Lane are two sweet girls that I am fortunate enough to call mine!
- I love to run and workout, but I hate getting up to get it done! I love the feeling during and after I finally get off my butt to do so, it’s just getting there that takes some time. Usually, I have to have an ultimate goal to work toward. Case in point, Read this post and I’m ashamed to say that I have yet to run over six miles since!

- I have a problem with starting things and never finishing them. Like crafts. I started a quilt almost three years ago and have yet to finish it. All that needs to be done is the binding…maybe I’ll get on that soon. I blame Pinterest for keeping me on my toes haha!

If you want to know any more quirky facts I seem to have, visit my About page! You can also follow me on Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, and Bloglovin for more fun stuff!
Thanks so much Erin for having me! I am really excited that we were paired together and have been able to form an awesome relationship!

Preparing for a Little One: Attachment Parenting {Guest Post}

Original Post over on Wifessionals.

If you would have asked me before if I practiced attachment parenting, I probably would have laughed or just not known what the heck you were asking me about.  My experience has been less research- based and really just the way we parent.  It kind of just happened.   If you Google on the subject, a list of about 7 or 8 activities pretty much defines what researchers call attachment parenting.  Ultimately, it comes down to being there for your baby’s every want and need while making them feel safe and secure.

Birth Bonding – The hospital we delivered at makes sure this happens.  They are huge on the skin-to-skin and “magic hour”.  The staff wants to make sure the parents get that initial bonding time with their new baby.  Although I think the bonding goes a lot further than the first hour, it was amazing to have them on board with the idea.  The birth was still crazy and I didn't end up having the full hour of just quiet bonding time, but don’t worry – there is plenty of time to bond with your baby!

Breastfeeding – Research says parents should be there for the baby’s wants and needs.  I believe this can be done breastfeeding or formula feeding.  I formula fed my first while I’m still breastfeeding my second, 11 months in.  I think they focus on breastfeeding because it is quicker to give the baby the need.  I feel bonded by both of my girls, but the nursing bond is 100% true.  Maybe not in the beginning, but you will get there, I promise.
Nurturing touch – This goes back to the safe and secure aspect.  And the fact that you are “attached” to your child will form the greatest bond and relationship.  I do practice baby-wearing, but only on occasion, and it was more when the girls were younger.  They are both active, so I don’t “wear” them very much.  Although, I do feel like I hold them A LOT ;)  For me, cuddling and loving on them is just as effective.
Bedding – Co-Sleeping or bed-sharing.  We bed-share, something I didn't think I would be doing, but here
I am!  With our first, we would bring her in bed with us if she woke up in the early morning hours.  She would go to sleep in her crib and now her bed, so it hasn't been an issue.  With our youngest, it was a convenience to have her in the bed with us since I was breastfeeding.  She still nurses once on most nights.  I love her in bed with us and I know she feels very secure, but I’m questioning when you stop.  I’ve tried moving her to the crib (without letting her cry it out) and I haven’t been successful.   I know at some point she needs to learn to be independent and fall asleep in her own room.

Constant Loving Care – For us, it hasn't been an option for me to stay home.  Thankfully we have my husband’s mother watch the girls while we both work.  We choose to put our oldest in day care part-time.  Wherever the girls are, they are receiving loving care.  I would love more than anything to be able to stay home with them and have constant care with one of us.  As parents, we have to make the best decisions.
Positive Discipline – Children learn by example.  Even if testing boundaries, remaining calm and positive will go so much further in teaching.  I’m conscious to try not to be too negative around them.  I don’t want them growing up being pessimistic, negative, or not confident.  I do think the way you go about talking to them, especially disciplining them, can effect that.

Balance – This is so.so.so. hard.  I’ve been a mother for almost 3 years now, and I still struggle with this.  You shouldn't feel guilty for wanting to get away with some friends,  get away with your husband, or even get away alone.  It’s healthy.  You can’t be the best mother you can be if you are angry, worn out, and stressed all of the time.

I am by no means an expert and I truly find my style a little bit of “my own”, although I do identify a lot with the attachment parenting.  If anyone has any questions (or advice) at all, please do not hesitate to e-mail me!

Keeping up with Kaitlyn

Today I’d like to introduce you to my blog “big” Kaitlyn at Keeping up with Kaitlyn.  She’s been so helpful with all my questions I have for her concerning anything and everything! This blog world is so exciting, but a bit intimidating and she has been great!  Meet Kaitlyn:

Hi everyone! My name is Kaitlyn and I blog over at Keeping up with Kaitlyn. I just graduated college (YAY!!) and have moved back home. I plan to go back to school to get my nursing degree. I blog about my everyday musings as I try to find my place in this world!

Just me at Disney World, wearing a tutu! NBD
Today I'm sharing with you FIVE FUN FACTS!

1// I was born on Christmas Eve and the nursing brought me to my mom's room in a stocking (after having a little bath) and I use it still to this day as my stocking on Christmas morning!

2// I'm a pretty indecisive person. For example, I'll walk around a store with a clothing item debating whether to get it or not, while I look around at everything else and end up putting it away in the end because I can't decide.

3// I don't like tomatoes, but I do LOVE ketchup, salsa and spaghetti sauce. Anyone else like this?

4// I never played an organized sport, but I did horseback ride and do ballet throughout my childhood.

At a horse show in 2008

Throwback to my senior solo dance in 2009

5// I switched my major twice during college (biology to international affairs) and now I'm returning to school to get a bachelors in nursing. Told you I was indecisive!

Thanks for letting me take over your blog today Erin!

We are both the indecisive type J  Don’t forget to Check out her blog and read all about her life as a new graduate! Congrats Kaitlyn!
